Healthy Pregnancy Tips – Beware from Eating Disorders

Pregnancy is affected by anorexia and bulimia. Women with both of these conditions, or a history of eating disorders experienced more fertility problems, unplanned pregnancies, and negative feelings about having children than women with no such history.

The need to provide extra support to women with current or prior eating disorders before conception and during pregnancy.

When planning a pregnancy or becoming pregnant we would encourage women with eating disorders, even if it was in the past, to discuss this with their doctors.

Failures in identifying preventable and treatable medical problems and wrongly putting the health of babies over that of mothers has led to a rise in deaths.

A rise in the number of "high risk" pregnancies, including older and obese mothers, has fuelled the problem.

Women are delaying childbearing until later in life, and the menopause is no longer a barrier to pregnancy.

Older women are more likely to be obese, have hypertension, or be predisposed to gestational diabetes and thromboembolism.

Pregnancy Tips 2011 - Fluconazole in early may cause birth defects

Chronic high doses (400 mg/day to 800 mg/day) of fluconazole (Diflucan, Pfizer) taken by women during the first trimester of pregnancy may be associated with specific birth defects in infants.

The risk does not appear to be associated with the single low dose of fluconazole (150 mg) that is used to treat yeast infection.

The safety alert is based on several published case reports of birth defects in infants whose mothers were treated with high doses of fluconazole for serious and life-threatening fungal infections during most or all of the first trimester.

As a result of these data, the pregnancy category for fluconazole indications has been changed from category C to category D.

Providers should counsel patients if the medicine is used during pregnancy or if a patient becomes pregnant while taking this medicine.
